According to Google trends, the first weekend in December is when we will all be looking to get our Christmas lights up and running. Well our resident expert on all (or at least most) things, Thom has some expert advice on exterior Christmas light decorating.
#1 Check lights
Check lights: Plug lights in and make sure they are working properly and not missing bulbs etc. well before you are ready to install. That way you can source out everything you need to be able to install efficiently without a Home Depot trip in the middle!
#2 Know where outlets are
Know where outlets are: Be aware where your outlets are so that you can plan your extensions cords and strands accordingly. The location of your outlets will affect how many extension cords you need as well as how long they need to be etc. Knowing where your outlets are will help you be prepared as well.
#3 Outdoor timer
Outdoor timer: Use an exterior timer for lights. You will need a timer per outlet etc. The last thing you need to be doing is running around at sunset to pug your lights in. Using a timer takes care of this. Depending on your timer they can be set to start and end at certain times or to go on at sunset.
Not a Thom tip, but if you have a smart home with Alexa, Siri etc. consider going with the smart outlet approach. There are many exterior smart plugs available, choose the ones that work the most seamlessly with what you already have set up or that works with your smart home platform.
#4 Tape extension cord connections
Tape extension cord connections: Tape extensions cords together if using more than one. This will keep them plugged in and also keep water from seeping into the gaps.
#5 Use cable ties where possible to secure
Use cable ties where possible to secure: Cable ties help keep your hard work secured in place. You can use cable ties on trees or railings to keep garland or lights in place.
#6 Use a secure and sturdy ladder
Use a secure and sturdy ladder: Remember you will likely end up needing a ladder. Make sure it is a sturdy one. Also operate and use the ladder safely. No light display is worth a trip to the hospital!
#7 Don't overload outlets/
Use Leds
Don't overload outlets/Use Leds: Each outlet only has a certain amount of power. Typically a 15 amp circuit can only handle up to 1800 watts which will get used quickly with regular Christmas lights. If your circuit is overloaded it can make your lights look dim and will possibly blow a circuit.
Thom recommends using led lights because they will use so much less wattage and you may not even need to worry about overloading circuits if you use all led lights.
#8 Outline branches uniformly
Outline branches uniformly: Outline the branches of the trees uniformly, keeping the strands about equidistant from each other. Also pick out the few feature branches and try to keep them balanced. You do not need to wrap every branch!
