Prepare for Summer
May is here which means that summer is right around the corner! The temperatures are starting to turn which means more time outside enjoying your property. Thom is our horticulture specialist with all of the years of experience which is why we always listen to what “Thom says.” Well here the following is the list of how Thom says to prepare for summer:
Clean beds out
Clean the beds out, pull out any weeds or invasive species. Take an inventory on your plants and keep an eye on any plants that seem like they are struggling. Make sure your perennials that are coming up have the space they need to thrive. After weeding, apply pre-emergent. 1 cup should cover about 70 square feet. Do not get pre-emergent on any plants!! Only put in bare areas of beds.
Mulch
Mulch covering should be about 2.” Do not pile mulch around the base of plants or cover plants branches or leaves with mulch.
Fertilize
Fertilizing is critical, and often skipped, in keeping your plants at their best. When using fertilizer about 1/2 cup will cover a medium shrub.
Plant annuals
We love perennials because they provide the structure when designing a space. But annuals are the finishing to a project. We often plan your beds with lush perennials that fill in over time and recommend planters with seasonal color that you can have some fun with.
These tips from Thom should get you started to enjoy your property this summer! Need more help than a clean up? Let’s start planning your dream backyard today!
