April- More home time equals more yard time

You are probably spending more time in your backyard than ever right now! I know that I am and I’ve noticed my neighbors working on their yard more than ever too. Being stuck at home means more yard time for playing, relaxing, and probably some backyard projects as well. While this national predicament has changed what all of us thought 2020 would bring, 2020 is not over and together we can make plans for your dream backyard to be realized sooner than you think!

While you’re outside enjoying your yard, or trying to maintain the chaos perhaps, now is a great time to be evaluating the state of your property. It is still early for the majority of your perennials. Some of the early bloomers have probably started to poke through, but the summer bloomers probably haven’t started yet. So now is the perfect time to evaluate your “hard lines” as we describe them without being distracted by the perennials. We usually encourage our design clients to make decisions with us on flow and hard lines and once those are stablished to then add the plants. When looking at flow, the idea is easy transition from indoor living to outdoor living.

While trying to enjoy your space with extra home time, what are you finding is lacking in your current outdoor space? Do you not have a good flow from inside to outside? Are you not taking full advantage of your property’s potential?

Here are some suggestions on how to evaluate where your outdoor space may be lacking:

Patio Space

I think this is the number one complaint we hear from a space that was not carefully designed. The square footage of the patio is not the end all. That the space was designed to suit your needs no matter the size is where excellent design is set apart from poorly designed spaces. That’s why we always design our spaces with furniture. What good is a patio if you cannot use it?

Soft seating

Are you lacking a place to truly relax? Soft seating would be your cushioned chairs and sofas etc. Soft seating is designed for relaxing, say reading a book or casual conversations?

Outdoor dining

Perhaps where you’re lacking is a place to gather for a meal outside. Warmer weather is coming and since going outside is one of our approved activities, dining outside is a great way to enjoy the outdoors from the safety of home.

Screening

Spending more time outside may mean more time looking at some of the uglier parts of your yard. We almost always recommend screening any outdoor units, like ac etc. and we also almost always recommend trash enclosures of some sort. We cannot get rid of these necessary functions, but we can design beautiful screening around them so that you can still use them functionally bu that they do not take away from the aesthetic of your home.

Focal point

Perhaps you are lucky and your yard is in pretty good shape! That’s great! Maybe now is a great time to add a focal point. A modern outdoor sculpture or a water feature are great focal points that add interest and relaxation to your outdoor time.
