Can we still plant?

“Thom says” answers the questions we’ve been getting recently,

“Can we still Plant?”

November is here and the holidays will soon be upon us! With our lives about to become very busy making preparations for eating lots of turkey soon to be followed by Christmas and holiday preparation our minds are beginning to shift focus from outside to inside! Before you officially shift your focus to eating lots of pie, we only have a short window left for planting for this year! So focus on the outside for just a few more weeks!

We are working nearly year round and constantly breaking people’s expectations on when to plant etc. With the right guidelines and expertise we are able to plant for most of the year. So we will often get questions like, is now the right time to plant? So let’s get expert advice from Thom, and find out what “Thom says.”

“Thom says” for later season planting:

It depends on the plant

To be clear, his first response was a vague “it depends” on the plant. So as with all advice we give, there is potential for special circumstances depending on the plant type, unusual temperatures, soil consistency, drainage issues, etc etc. All of these issues should be handled one on one, so of course, give us a call!

You want them to put in a few roots before the freeze and that would be 2nd or 3rd week in December

Essentially you want them to have a chance to take root before the ground freezes. Which in southeastern PA is usually around mid December

If you’re going to put plants in you need to do it pronto

Thom is talking to those of us who may have been holding onto plants, perennials etc and waiting for fall to plant them. Or have just plain not gotten around to it yet. Thom says if you’ve been holding on to any plants that need to be planted, that you need to do it pronto! He suggests that you shouldn’t be planting past mid November and so at this point there is no time like the present to get them in the ground.

You won’t be able to get perennials past mid November

Perennial farms and greenhouses shift their focus from sales to growing about mid November.

Deciduous trees, anytime you can dig a hole

Essentially as long as the ground is not frozen so much that you cannot dig a hole, the deciduous trees are good to plant.

Broadleaf evergreens (like hollies) not past December 1st

The hollies have a little longer window than most plants, but Thom still suggests not planting them any later than December 1st

Make a game plan!

Whether you have pants ready to go that you need to get in the ground or that you have put off revamping your outdoor space now is the perfect time to get the ball rolling. Seriously, reach out to us now and get the design process started and begin planning for spring. As you can imagine, spring is our busiest time and you will probably want to call when everyone else is calling too. Why not plan for spring now and be ahead of those people in line? We love planning ahead. It ensures that you and we have had ample time to make sure everything is perfect, that we can have permits ready to go, that we can have materials in place etc. Sometimes we need to make special trips north or south for boulders, pavers etc. The more time we have to plan the more intentional your project will be!
